This research project is conducted at Obuchi Lab, the University of Tokyo, in collaboration with Sato Lab, the University of Tokyo. More information and the full credits can be found here.
The work received the Golden Lion, the highest award given at La Biennale di Venezia 2021.
We propose a construction process that implements concepts of feedback-loop generative design, continuous structural safety analysis, cloud-based data management, real-time spatial data acquisition, and builder guidance. Four developments underpin our process:
(1) the on-site production of randomized branched cement geometries by pouring into organic-shaped channels directly drawn in soil
(2) the development of a novel macro-scale aggregate structural model capable of performing continuous data analysis
(3) the integration of VR motion-tracking hardware using custom accessories for human-assisted cooperative real-time data acquisition and user guidance
(4) the implementation of a custom cloud-based data interlink and visualization system for fully remote multi-site construction management.
The result is a closed-loop system where motion tracking equipment provides XYZ coordinates for each stacked cement piece to a structural model that optimizes the target prototype and generates the allowed building volumes which are relayed as instructions via LED-equipped accessories worn by each builder.
Personal contributions include the design of both the hardware and software components of the guidance system, utilizing VIVE tracker and Unity.
